Good, simple food; great cocktails and the best company: The Grill on the Alley was an easy choice for a meal with the girls.
A few weeks ago I popped up to Manchester to see my friends Emma and Kate. The three of us hadn’t all been together for about 18 months so a catch-up was well overdue and when Manchester is just 2 hours on the train from Euston, there’s really no excuse for leaving it that long.
I arrived at my hotel just after 1pm and waited for Emma. I decided I should road test the cocktail menu in preparation for her arrival and settled on this beautiful mix of gin, aperol, pink grapefruit juice, lemon and passion fruit syrup. It was an excellent choice and we both ended up having quite a few while we waited for Kate.
Someone had recommended The Grill on the Alley to me years ago for good food in the city centre and for a restaurant with a great vibe. When we arrived we ordered our drinks, I went for a classic Pornstar Martini which was very good, Emma had a strawberry cream and Kate a Steak Holder which tasted like a hangover the next day! It was really good but one of those lethal cocktails that goes down a little too easy.
I had garlic pesto mushrooms which I really enjoyed, the portion size was really generous so I couldn’t finish it but the mushrooms were so delicious; Kate had the chicken liver parfait with bacon jam which looked amazing and Emma had a corn on the cob which was about 30cm long!
Whilst Emma and Kate opted for the steak sandwiches I went for chicken fajitas. I really like fajitas and I don’t really eat red meat so I was really pleased with my choice until the steak sandwiches turned up baked into a really crusty piece of bread and oozing cheese. Serious food FOMO.
My fajitas were excellent though, the chicken and peppers were cooked well and had a lot of flavour and the guacamole and salsa really stood out.
We were having such a great time catching up and laughing and joking that I accidentally ordered a dessert without actually meaning to! It was a really rich chocolate and salted caramel pot which even between three of us we couldn’t put a proper dent in. It was delicious but way too much after all the food and cocktails.
If you’re in Manchester and want good, reasonably priced food I would try the Grill on the Alley and I’ll happily go back when I’m in Manchester.
